The Kansas Historical Society announces the Pospishil Building in Luray and the Old Greeley County Courthouse in Tribune have been selected to receive grants to help preserve these historic buildings.

The Kansas Historical Society will present a check for $100,000 to the Pospishil Building at 10 a.m. on Aug. 27, in Luray, Russell County. The Pospishil Buliding was the first native stone building in Luray. Built in 1898-99 using limestone blocks from the Pospishil farm, this building is in an Italianate design featuring a Mesker Brothers Iron Works storefront with classic elements like double-rosettes and fleur-delis. The Pospishil Building is located at 101 Main St, Luray.

Then at 4 p.m. on Aug. 27, the Old Greeley County Courthouse in Tribune, Greeley County, will be awarded a check for $94,982. Built in 1890, it served as the original courthouse for Greeley County. It also served as a community hub for events. It currently houses the Horace Greeley Museum. The building is located at 214 East Harper St, Tribune.

“The Heritage Trust Fund grant is a state program that provides matching funds for the preservation of properties listed in the Register of Historic Kansas Places or the National Register of Historic Places,” said Darbee Chard, State Historic Preservation Office Subgrants Coordinator. “The program has awarded more than $3.2 million since its development in 1990. The grant has been awarded across 93 counties in Kansas to work on the preservation of courthouses, bridges, barns, and other historic properties.”

These grants are provided by The Heritage Trust Fund (HTF), a statewide program that reimburses expenses for projects that preserve or restore historic properties. The fund focuses on urgent priorities and community benefit, and its grants can range from $5,000 to $100,000.
