MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Former Barton Cougar pitcher Zac Thornton earned his first major-league victory with six shutout innings for the New York Mets 5-0 over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Left-hander Thornton (1-1, 1.93 ERA) has thrown 18 consecutive shutout innings, the longest streak by a Mets rookie since Steven Matz (2016). He's permitted one earned run with 14 strikeouts in his past 19 innings.

Lawrence's Thornton pitched at Grand Canyon (Ariz). (9-2, 3.87 ERA) after a 2-year Barton stint (16-1, 3.23 ERA). Thornton earned first-team All-Jayhawk West and All-Region 6 honors.

Thornton paid tribute to Barton Cougar head coach Brent Biggs and pitching coach Brett McBride.

"I had no Division 1 offers," Thornton said. "The coaches at Barton Community College, Brent Biggs and Brett McBride did a really good job installing confidence in me for a guy who had never pitched before. I've run with that."
