SMOKY VALLEY 38, LARNED 16

LINDSBORG — Jason Duvall's first game at Larned started perfectly with an opening 4-yard touchdown by Owen Shaver. Duvall's Indians also closed with a Shaver 23-yard touchdown.

Smoky Valley dominated between those scores with a 38-point outburst for a 38-16 Central Kansas League football victory.

Larned's opening 65-yard drive mixed runs and passes and featured two fourth-down conversions. Shaver's 4-yard touchdown was followed by Zev Cox's 2-point conversion.

Quarterback Mason Reidel answered with a 55-yard touchdown pass to Eli Lambert. Crew Elliot converted the 2-pointer for an 8-8 tie.

Smoky Valley used its experienced, and bigger, line to pound the ball behind the running of Elliot as the Vikings dominated the game.

Elliot scored on a 1-yard touchdown and a 2-pointer for a 16-8 lead. An onside kick was negated when Larned’s Jax Johnson recovered a fumble.

Lambert's interception ended halftime at 16-8.

Lambert raced 85 yards for a touchdown on the second-half kickoff. He broke several tackles and executed a perfect stiff-arm for a 22-8 lead.

"The big plays hurt," said Larned coach Jason Duvall. "After we grab momentum, their touchdown set us back. We lost a starting tackle due to an unsportsmanlike penalty and that bothered our offensive execution."

Elliot scored on a 6-yard run and caught a 50-yard scoring pass from Riedel to close the Vikings' scoring.

Larned’s 18-yard pass completion from Shaver to Hunter Pontius was followed by Shaver's 23-yard touchdown run. Koby Lang caught a pass for the two-point conversion.

Shaver connected on 8 of 17 passes for 98 yards and ran the ball for 56 yards.

Slade Sundahl had three receptions as did Koby Lang, Hunter Pontius two and Bently Nelson and Jax Johnson one.

“We’ve got a number of things to clean up, but I can’t fault our effort," Duvall said. "We didn’t connect with our passes. We got tired due to so many guys playing nearly every snap."

Larned travels to Hillsboro Friday.
