Local car show puts the ‘Vroom’ in rescue

Milt Raymer and daughter Cindy restored this 1938 Buick Century, featured at the 2026 Paws and Claws Car Show.

The Golden Belt Humane Society and Adopt-A-Pet raised money and showed off some dogs available for adoption on Saturday by hosting the eighth annual Paws and Claws Car Show at Brit Spaugh Park. There were show vehicles and vendors, raffles and door prizes, with proceeds benefiting the Humane Society.

A familiar fur baby at the event was a husky named Ashley, or “Ash” for short, who was adopted a few years ago by Emily Smith. She passed away on Dec. 15, 2023 after a car crash in Dighton. Emily’s husband Kaydan and her mother-in-law Kim returned to this year’s car show.

Among the car enthusiasts showing vehicles was Milt Raymer, Great Bend, who will soon be 94 years old. He and his daughter Cindy brought the 1938 Buick Century convertible they restored together a few years ago. Raymer said they are having a lot of fun with car shows and parades. The Paws and Claws was their first event this year.

They are working on restoring another antique car, a 1929 Model T Ford.

Rosewood’s Dolly Trolley was also at the park to provide tours of the town.

Adopt-A-Pet sponsor Jean Clair said this year’s show was a successful fundraiser for the Humane Society. More fundraisers are coming in June.
